After being away from astronomy for many years I jumped back in with a LX200. I just got a LXD-55 AR-6 annd that GEM is a pain in the rumpski. Is there some easy way to get used to these oor a quick setup procedure or am I doomed to be a goto guy in Alt Az forever.
Am I spoiled by Alt Az?

Check out this link for a nifty tutorial on using a GEM. The key is to get it set for your latitude (a one-time procedure) and then roughly polar aligned. For purely visual viewing, I just set the declination to 90 and make sure I can spot Polaris through my finder scope. That's close enough for me. Keep at it!!!
