Borg eyepiece adaptor

Using my .965" orthoscopic eyepieces in a binoviewer, I have noticed that alignment is a critical factor. If it is off a little I end up looking at a double image at high powers. It has worked to rotate the 1.25" to .965" adaptor until the images merge, but it seems like there must be something better.
After looking around, I found the Borg #4605 which looks like some type of compression ring. Has anyone had experience with these; especially in binos, or is there anything better for me to use?

Bill,

Don't know nuthin' bout the Borg #4605 except that it looks different.

The crux of the problem is that you need to find a self-centering adaptor. If you don't, you may always have merging issues. A normal set screw or compression ring adaptor works by applying pressure to one side of the ep barrel. It holds the ep in place by forcing the barrel against the opposite wall. If there is any play before tightening, this manifests itself as an off-center position of the ep barrel. Not a problem for cyclops viewing, but a huge problem for binoviewing.

Binoviewer ep holders are desinged to be self-centering. This is done to maintain solid collimation between the two sides. The reason you can get them to merge when you rotate them is you are matching their position.

Of course, you knew all of this, but I was in a pontificating mood again.

Give Denkmeier optical or Harry Siebert a call and see if they have any ideas (both Astromart sponsors wink.

Clear skies,
