C6-RGT or C8-SGT..."observation ability" opinions

Hello all!

I'm looking into getting a new scope since I have only ever owned a 4.5" reflector. I've heard good things about both the C6-RGT and C8-SGT(I'm still undecided on getting the go-to feature.). I will be attempting to view planets and DSO's so I realize I'm making compromises. So, I'm wondering how does a 6" achro refractors' "visual ability" compare to an 8" schmidt-cassegrian? Does the 6" refractor have a noticable/ observable difference in "light grasp" compared to the 8" schmidt given the 8" schmidt has a central obstruction? Are there abilities that one does better than the other for visual observations of planets and DSO's? Thanks for help!!! smile

Go with the SCT. The Celestrons have excellent optics and the added ligh grasp over the 6" will be noticed. The 6" refractor is noted to be bulky on the eq mount and not as stable as the shorter sct ota.

In addition to the difference in aperture, you're also trading off chromatic aberration in the refractor versus decrease in contrast in the SCT. Portability is also something else to keep in mind.

I recently sold my C6R and picked up a C9.25S and haven't regretted it.

Thanks for the replies! I was thinking about it all day and have pretty much talked myself into the sch-cass. Now I just need to decide if I'm going to stick with my initial interest in the C8-RGT or find out if it is worth-while to get a Meade LXD-75 8" sch-cass. Thanks again! smile
