Can I fix it?

Was always a bit dissatisfied with the way my 3 year old TV102 seemed to mush in and out of focus. There was no snap and it was hard to tell when it had reached optimum focus. It seemed to require constant fiddling with focus while observing. Faint stars looked good, but bright star images weren't tight and seemed to flare a bit.

Tonite, for the first time, I replaced its original Everbright diagonal with an AP Maxbright I had purchased for an SCT. It seems to have made quite a difference. It's now much easier to tell when I've reached focus. There's definitely some snap to it. Star images are more pleasing as well. Tonite I was able to split double stars using lower magnifications than my notes show were used in the past.

Is it possible for a misaligned diagonal to create these problems? Can I realign the Everbright myself or should it go back to Televue?

Send the TV Diag back to TV and have them check it out. They will either fix it or replace it. Atleast I believe they would do it as long as it has no been tampered with or opened by you.

You might also consider the possibility that the
TV102 is out of collimation, and that the Maxbright
is not seated properly, hence canceling the
problems in the 102. And that the Everbright is fine.

I have found the Maxbright, while great in AP scopes,
does not agree with some refractor brands. For example,
the Vixen Fluorite I had worked great with 4
different diagonals, but always showed collimation
problems when the Maxbright was used. The big
undercut on the Maxbright 2" barrel prevented it from
seating properly, and it always ended up tilted and
off-axis.

If TV says the Everbright is fine, I'd send them the
102 next. Good luck.
