celestron c5 gone crazy

The last two outings my clestron c5 has had two problems, both of which make it inoperable.

First, after alignment, when I go to any object it goes there but then the handset freezes and continues to pretend its still slewing to object. None of the buttons work. I have to restart and reboot.

In the alternate, if I don't align and just wish to go to my favorite objects when I push the right arrow it just continues to slew to the right indefinately and the handset becomes unresponsive; none of the buttons work.

I thought that the second problem might be due to a stuck button but I opened up the nexstar handset and it fine.

Has anyone heard of this problem? Do I need a new handset? What should I do?

thanks,
dom

Almost definitely a low voltage problem. Nexstars, and all goto scopes, are battery hogs. If voltage drops much below 12 volts, this is just the type of thing that starts to happen. And, if that's not bad enough, cold weather only makes the problem worse. Sometimes the hand paddles start to have erratic behavior when they get cold even when there is good voltage.
If you're using the a/c adapter, then it's obviously something else. -Kurt Horsley
