I am in the market for an 80mm APO. i have narrowed the choices down to three, the Orion ED 80, The Meade Series 5000 80 mm ED APO. or the W/O ZenithStar 80 II ED. The scope will be mounted directly on an Atlas EQ-G or piggy-backed on the Orion XLT 11" SCT. It will be used primarily for astrophotography of DSO's, maybe some planetary use. Does the short focal length, 480mm, of the Meade rule it out for planetary use? Beyond that it almost seems like a toss up between the three. Any help with this dilemma would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi Joe,
I've had an ED80 and while it gave great views of the planets it was very heavy, and the tube has a much larger diameter than similar sized scopes. Maybe something to consider since you're piggybacking.

Hi Joe,
I would like to say something without it being taken wrong. If you want an APO, none of the scopes you listed are APO, they are all Semi-APO. If you are doing visual astronomy, then it will be fine, but for photography, well then there is a difference.
Any of the three would be a good visual scope. I think you would enjoy any of them. But, if you want an APO, then you need to look at other offers.
