Coronado (Meade) PST

I just, in the last few days, purchased a used PST from Highpoint Scientific. After ordering it, I found out about PST problems with the coating(s) on the objective lens "rusting" with resultant deteriorated views. My PST has the opaque coating on the objective that, evidently, had the problem. The question is, should I expect that this will happen, or are there older PST's that still work well? I do not know how old this telescope is. Since I received it yesterday, I have not had the opportunity to try it out under the sun. If I want to send this telescope back, I have 30 days to do so. Any input will be helpful. Thanks

I wouldn't think that Highpoint would sell a PST that they hadn't either thoroughly checked out or fixed, or without letting the buyer know that there was a problem prior to the sale. Your scope is probably fine, but you might ask Highpoint for your own peace of mind. You might also try contacting Meade for help. A serial number from the telescope could probably reveal a lot. Altough your scope is used, it may be a newer one without the rust problem.

Sadly, even some of the replacement blue mirror coatings later developed rust.

I thought mine was purchased late enough that the rust problem had run its course and it was safe to buy one. After a year and a half, it developed the rust too. Meade took care of it free, but it took a very long time and no one at Meade could ever tell me how far along they were. It simply showed up on my doorstep one day.

I still have a feeling of dread whenever I remove the objective cap, waiting for another rust fest.

There was a thread on CN that had a huge range of affected serial numbers, if that kind of thing interests you....
