Digital Setting Circles

Hello:

In search for maximum portability, I recently acquired a Universal Astronomics Microstar Deluxe (on a Bogen 3021) with a Celestron C5 or TV60 on it. I really like to star hop, but between the job, the kids, and our darn weather, I have limited time for viewing. I am thinking of putting a set of Computerized Digital Setting Circles on it. There are many brands available. Would any of them work? Would it be difficult to do?

I have a Tele Vue Gibraltar az-el mount with the Sky Tour. That setup works well for getting most objects in the eyepiece.

I've been planning to install digital setting circles (Losmandy encoders) on my Losmandy G-11 mount, and they finally came in after being on order since July of last year. :S The DSCs should be installed in the next few days, and assuming the weather cooperates I'll likely give them first light at the next Denver Astronomical Society monthly open house in a couple weeks. I'll pass along some initial comments after having a chance to play with the DSCs on the mount.

Rey,

I do not (yet) use it on my scopes, but the Argo Navis product has received numerous positive reviews and is a solid product. The company contact (I think he's the owner), Gary Kopff, is a great guy-- knowledgeable and very helpful.

I can say that good digital setting circles, properly mounted, will consistently put objects near the center of a medium powered eyepiece (even in your C5). You should be able to find different models at star parties; try some of them out. The Argo Navis is more expensive than most other models, but offers the greatest flexibility.
