1. a-po ('a' like in apple)

2. ay-po (long 'a')

3. A-P-O (say the letters individually)

I hear 3 sometimes, but that makes no sense to me; it's not an acronym, it's short for "apochromatic". Honestly, I'm not sure how to say "apochromatic"; I just say Ay-Po.

I say it "AY poh" and care not one wit whether anybody thinks that is correct or not. If you want to be "correct", simply refrain from such a heinous abbreviation, an abbreviated adjectival noun. Yuk!

'Why' is more interesting than 'How' :-)

This thread illustrates the wisdom of constructing sentences to avoid using the term "APO." Like "Ophiuchus" the term "APO" must not be pronounced, only written.

:-)

FYI, I pronounce it as "ap" (like in "apple") - "o" as in "orange"

I used to say it "wrong" until I chatted with Thomas Back at the BFSP. He pronounces it as in your #1.

I used to do #3.
