I need a good guide camera for my G11

I have tried to guide using a web cam (quick cam 4000)and could only see bright stars. I don't have the skill to modify one and would like to buy a camera that will show a field of stars on my laptop to guide on when connected to my Celestron HD-102AZ 4 inch scope. I saw someone using a SBIG 2000 two weeks ago. It showed a clear starfield on his laptop while using a 4 inch scope. I don't have that type of money but would like that type of response from the ccd. My price range would be about $400. I would be guiding a non Gemini G11 mount either directly or using software like GuideDog. I dont need the camera for anything else. I have digital and film cameras for photos.

1. Would an old ST-4 guide camera show the response to dimmer stars?

2. Has anyone tried the new ccds that are out on the market?

3. Has anyone used their non web cam camera with GuideDog?

Thanks for your input.

Hey Dwight,
I guide my G-11 with an ST4 and an Orion 80ED piggy backed on a C9.25. The ST4 is a wonderful guider, and doesn't require a computer to operate. Perfect for film and DSLR imaging. It operates on 12VDC, which I make with a 26AH Lead Acid battery. It takes a little patience to learn, but once you have it figured out, it does a very good job.

Hope that helps. I got mine used on Amart for $450. The attached image shows the controller on an accessory shelf of my G-11, along with the DewBuster controller and the Losmandy DSC unit.
