I am a newbie and thus, besides my ignorance in terms of knowledge I also suffer from lack of knowledge of the terms for most of the things you experienced imagers know. So, please forgive me as I attempt to describe the situation and seek answers and advice.
I am trying to settle on some imaging trains for a variety of used CCD cameras I have accumulated. I have a C14 and I did set it up for the Hyperstar, but my current questions concern traditional imaging from the back end.
In a situation where one wants to use an imaging train that consists of 2" diameter elements that can be slid into and out of a 2" accessory, such as a 2" visual back, how does one set things up so that one attains a repeatable depth of insertion on future occasions?
My engineering background leads me toward assembling imaging trains that screw onto the scope, so that there is no difference in fore/aft positioning from one session to the next when imaging rigs have been used, removed, and then re-installed; but, quite a few of the reps with whom I have spoken mention the setup where one slides the train into the securing device and when I ask "how do you get the same position each time?", they seem to think it's not an important issue.
The thing I wanted to ask, aside from whether I am seeking to do something that - indeed - isn't important, is whether anyone is aware of a part that would act like a spacer, perhaps 3-6mm in axial length (1/8" - 1/4"
and fitting 42mm and 48mm diameter accessories, that would have a protruding rim which exceeds 2" in diameter so as to stop the insertion of the train at the same precise spot every time.
Basically, something like a big washer with a 42mm or 48mm hole in it. It would be nice to have it in a material that is sturdy, but wouldn't mar the finish of the other components...
It's interesting, now that I'm writing this, that in the weeks I've been wondering about it, I never stopped and had the thought that what I'm looking for is exactly like a big washer. SO, I will go look for that on the fastener sites.
But, if anyone would care to respond to my question about whether what I'm asking to do is a useless exercise, or if you know abnout something that's made for the purpose, I'd love to have your thoughts.
