Improving a tabletop Newtonian

Started by Lee_S, 06/24/2007 10:15PM

I think this tabletop scope is just a regular Newtonian reflector with some kind of corrector/barlow built into the focuser to increase the focal length. I'm really tempted to take it apart.

1) Any ideas about what can be done to improve it a bit?
2) Would it work as a short fast scope if the corrector were removed?
3) Can the mirror cell be reworked to allow collimation?

I have several telescopes, but none are semi-APO, APO, or in anyway valuable.

Lee: I have had a few of these small scopes I bought at garage sales, taking it apart is probably a good idea, particularly if you leave it apart.

"Generally" these scopes use a spherical mirror around F/4 so removing the corrector is not workable. Removing the corrector means the location of the focal plane is much closer to the secondary which means a lower profile focuser is needed.

With the spherical primary, I don't think this is so important.

For very little money and effort you could build something like the mount below for it.

It can work surprisingly well.
