Location of patio for observing

Here is a topic I have not seen addressed before. Now that I am retired, the kids are through college, out of the home, I am thinking of downsizing. If you were going to move into, lets say a villa or condo, what direction would you want your patio to face for observing? Reasons?
Thanks,
Barry

South, with a view of the East and West would be the best for the Northern Hemisphere, I would think.

Over the course of a year, all objects visible from your location will pass to the south (or straight up). Having an unobstructed southern view will maximize your viewing opportunities. Having a view to either eastern or western horizons for comets, Mercury, Venus and planetary groupings is also nice to have.

I like to have Polaris in sight so that I can do an equitorial alignment. Otherwise, a full southern exposure is what you want.
