Mirror recoating vs. replacement on a 6" Newtonain

I wasn't certain if this is better here or under the Telescope Making forum, so we'll try it here.

I have a Celestron/Vixen 6" Newt on which the secondary coating has started to corrode. The coatings on the primary mirror still appear to be fine with the exception of some edge corrosion. Am I better off replacing just the secondary at this time, or simply having both recoated for the $75-$100 cost of new coatings?

Thanks for your expert advice.

Hi,
Not sure what size the secondary is, but Meade has a sale on secondary mirrors they have left in stock. Very cheap and they are Pyrex. $10-15 for 1.3"-1.8" I believe.

But, if you get the primary coated, they will usually do the secondary for just a few bucks at the same time. Cost is about what you have stated.

I think someone like L&L will coat a 6 incher for considerably less than $75. I believe when I checked (IMMSMW) it was more like $40.

The real question is, how good are the mirrors? If you are happy with the mirrors, then definitely have them coated and be done with it.

If you wonder about the mirrors, have them tested and then decide whether you want to have them refigured, buy new ones or what...
