I was thinking of purchasing the Atlas mount for my 10" Meade Starfinder Newtonian. This is the one which sells for 700 smackaroos. Anyone purchase one and wonder what you think of its performance.

Hi John,
I agree with Dave. The Atlas is an amazing mount. But...have you looked at the EQ-6 SkyScan? It's going to be available very soon, and is likely to be very impressive. If you want GOTO capabilities, and high weight capacity, I don't think you can go wrong with it. Price is not yet fixed, but it will probably be one of the best deals in it's class. -Kurt Horsley

I have an Orion Atlas mount and use it with a 10" f4.7 Orion reflector and a 6" f8 (Meade) refractor. It handles the loads very easily and in a rather windy environment is nice and steady. Tracking is excellent.
The only drawback I can see is that DSC's for it are only made by one company and are about $200 more expensive than DSC's offered by other companies for non-Atlas mounts.
The R.A. drive is powered by eight D- cells and amazingly they seem to run forever. In a year I have only replaced them once. The mount is a winner.
my 2 cents.....
