Hi

What are the the best companies to send a mirror to for coating? I am interested in an enhanced aluminum coating for a 10" f4 paraboloid.

Thanks
Mike

I have had two custom mirror makers recommend:
Clausings (Midwest)
Spectrum Coating (Florida)
This does not mean that others aren't excellent, simply that these are.

There is a fair amount of concern that enhanced coatings are not a smooth as the less reflective coatings, and the difference in percentages is very small. This has made me pause (for a year now) before getting a mirror recoated.

I'm sure that other more expereiced voices will chime in.

Zambuto uses Ion assisted deposition Aluminum with quartz (SiO2) overcoat from Spectrum.http://www.spectrum-coatings.com/telescop.htm Carl says enhanced coating can effect the figure of his very smooth mirrors. If it's good enough for Carl.....

I just had a 8 inch mirror done by Spectrum (standard Al + quartz) and they did an excellent job.

I would avoid Clausing.

I also had a 13" mirror done by Precision Applied Products more than ten years ago, enhanced Aluminum, and it looks as good today as it did then. Remarks re: surface roughness of enhanced coatings notwithstanding, I use it for deep sky, and get many compliments regarding the high contrast images it produces.

Decisions, decisions...

I have had a 10" and a 16" mirrors coated here:

He did a really quick turn around on them and they look great. His coatings are not "enhanced" though, but some of these other posts have addressed why I didn't go with enhanced.
