I have an Orion Apex 5-inch Maksutov which weighs about eight pounds. I'd like to put it on a very portable, convenient mount, preferably a photo or video tripod with slow-motion controls added, to use for astronomy. The mount I currently have it on --- the largest Slik model ---just doesn't work: there is way too much vibration. The photo tripod Orion recommends doesn't work either. Will any photo or video mount work with a telescope of that size for astronomical viewing, with smooth panning and sufficient tension to hold steady when I take the scope to near-zenith? Or will I have to go with a less portable equatorial mount, with the hassles of counterweights, the tray between the legs, etc.?
Portable, convenient mount

Richard,
Now it seems like the AZ3 mount ought to work for that little scope. I had a Celestron version of that mount that gave fabulous stability with a Tele Vue Ranger.
That mount wasn't good enough for the Intes MK-66 Deluxe, and it was this that sucked me into ATM-ing. TThe telescope and mount are sold now, but you can see what I did for the MK-66 in the photo below.
