My 12" OTA is approx 38 LBS. Specs I got from Meade tech support a couple years ago list it at 36 LBS, but I think it's actually a couple pounds heavier. What mount are you thinking of? I've got two Losmandy mounts and really like them, though I've overhauled them a bit. I just read a great review of the new direct drive Astro Systeme DDM85. The DDM85 looks roughly equivalent to the Paramount ME and is a little beyond my current price range but the article said Astro Systeme is soon going to release more affordable gearless mounts equal to the GM-8 and G-11 Losmandy weight bearing capacity. I would love to go gearless -- no more worm gear replacement, no more periodic error hassle!

There are some disadvantages to that scheme. One is the need for lots of power! Like 20 amp at 48 volt supply to make it work. Also, forget parking because as soon as you turn off the power, both axes go limp and can rotate unhindered. So, if you are out of balance, the axis will swing wild.
