I really want to scale down from a giant 8inch newtonian but do not want to lose the visual potential. I'm thinking an APO refractor like the 115mm Eon from Orion. How would that compare to views through the 8inch newtonian?
Refractors vs Reflectors?

Carter, if you are really getting nice views through the 8", you might be a bit disappointed. I had a very nice Newtonian at one time and got rid of it because of its size. I have a very nice 100mm apo now on a Twilight II alt-azimuth and while it is much easier to move about, there is no comparison in the views. While the 115mm has a half inch more aperture than mine, I still think it would disappoint you a bit in comparison to your 8". You might actually be better off going with a high quality 6" Newtonian.
