Replacement Focuser for Synta

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a replacement focuser for my Synta 4.7" Refractor? I've worked and reworked the factory focuser and I've decided that it's pretty much useless. I've seen a few nice ones out there but they are also a bit more than my budget can afford. Just curious what everyone else thinks.

William Optics has a drop-in replacement, the same apparent crayford as on their own scopes.

Synta itself uses a crayford on its APOs, I do not believe it is available separately.

More interesting is the Moonlight crayford, which has collimation capability, which should come in handy for people with the chromacor.

Curious if you added any Teflon to the focuser. It is my expereince that the problem with the Synta focusers is that they chince on the teflon. The lower pads, unlike the solid blocks that GSO uses are some flaky folded sheet. The upper block (also the focuser lock pad) is not teflon but PolyEthylene or somesuch.

I have had good luck with Synta focusers by adding a bit of Teflon where needed using a variety of techniques and then careful reassembly.

After cleaning and adding the teflon, I first install the drawtube and adjust the two allen set screws so the craw tube is smooth and does not rock.

Then I install the pinion and adjust the tension using the the 4 screws until the action is as good as I can get it.

Yeah, its not a high end Crayford but it's good enough to do the job.

For what its worth...
