Running a LX200 off of a car battery

Hello,

I just obtained a used Meade 8" LX200 that takes a 12 Volts DC input. (i.e. NOT 18 Volts)

I have a cord that will plug into a car cigarette lighter, but I need to power the scope far away from my vehicle.

Here is my question:

Can I splice clamps into the cigarette lighter adapter and power the scope by simply clamping onto a 12V car battery (making sure I've kept the polarity correct)? As I have an extra car battery, I'd like to not buy one of those 12V power supplies.

Will this work? Is there anything I need to be aware of?

You can run it from a battery no problem. You can also make a cigarette lighter cable for the battery using clips for the battery post connection, some heavy wire and a female cigarette lighter plug available at Wal-Mart or other places. I bought one with two lighter sockets for about $4-5, cut off the male plug on the other end and then attached it to the battery so that I would have two places for power. I use a 115 AMP battery, a trolling motor battery that is deep cycle, but to just run the LX200, the battery need not be that big.
