hi. i have a pst on a camera tripod. weight wise it's fine since the pst weighs almost nothing. and it's nice for that reason. grab it throw it outside for a quick look and back in.

but a camera tripod is hard to aim and of course, no slow motion knobs.

so what is a cheap (that's important in this case)/simple idea for this dedicated purpose?

alt/az with knobs or should i put it on a eq mount?

thanks
tom.

Tom: What camera tripod are you using? I have my PST mounted on a Bogen 3040 (similar to the 3046) with a three axis head and mount the scope "side-saddle". I made a little bracket to mount alongside the tripod head rather than on top of it so it is pretty easy to track.

We mounted ours on an inexpensive alt-az with slow-motion controls, purchased right here off of Astromart...since imaging the Sun requires nice quick exposures, a motorized mount isn't required, and setting up a equatorial mount probably isn't necessary either.

We moved off of a camera tripod to an alt-az mount simply for the slow-motion controls - the smoothest camera tripod head we could find still made for some jerky motion when keeping up with the Sun...

I use mine on an Orion EQ-1, plus their drive, and camera attachment gizmo. I bought all three of the Orion website as "seconds" for a very reasonable amount. It works for imaging with a webcam. I've found that I use this mount as much or more as a "tracker" for wide-field imaging with a DSLR. After seeing this set-up, two friends of mine have gotten the same mount.

I'd think a Vixen Porta Mount would be fine, Tom. They run around $200 used; not cheap, but not bad either. They have slow motion controls.
