I haven't tried any software programs for planning an evening of observing and wondering how the better programs stack up against star charts and guide books. I currently use the NSOG and a seasonal star chart. Thanks!

I use SkyTools2, but it's been a while since I tried out any competitors. It's specifically designed as planning software, and is useful and easy to learn. I use it to generate and print lists of objects, print out finder charts for difficult objects, and to enter my observation log into. By entering my notes into SkyTools, I get an easily searchable database of my observations.

I use it in conjunction with guidebooks (like the NSOG). It's generally easier to get an idea of worthwhile objects from a book, however there are many useful lists available from the SkyTools/Cappellasoft website, as well as some that are included (e.g., Messier list, R.A.S.C. Finest NGC Objects, Astronomical League lists, etc.).

I like it a bunch, I think it really helps my enjoyment of my sessions.
