Hi -- I have a Tak Teegul with the Lapides modification. Does anyone know how the two parts of this (wonderful) mount are attached to each other? E.g. does the top portion twist off, with the black cylindrical connector (about 3" dia x 1") then bolted to the other portion? (I have no intention of diassembling the mechanisms within each portion, BTW) Thanks -- Michael

Hi Michael:

It has been a while since I took mine apart, but the top does not twist off.

If memory serves, first you loosen the 3 set screws in the base part. Loosen them quite a bit. These screws secure a dovetail surface that holds the actual mount base to the azimuth axis assembly. If you look at the very bottom of figure 4 of this article I wrote a long time ago you can see the dovetail surface:

Pull the base from the azimuth axis assembly(it is snug, but should separate easily when the set screws are real loose). Look inside the azimuth axis and you will see the allen bolts that hold the altitude axis assembly to the azimuth axis assembly. It is real easy to take apart and reassemble. At no time are the actual bearing surfaces or the worm and wheel gears exposed.
