Telescope Question

I am curious if there is such thing as too much light when observing planets like Jupiter? While observing Jupiter I noticed that stopping down my Synta 120 to 60mm seemed to improve contrast and the over all view. Now somewhere in the past I've heard that stopping down one's aperture is normal when dealing with bright objects but I guess I just wanted to know some other peoples' point of view.

Thanks,

David
