Ultrasonic Cleaning

While paging through the airline's "Sky Mall" magazine on the return from Winter Star Party, I noticed an ad for an ultrasonic cleaner. This is geared for jewelry and eyeglasses, but I wondered if it might be suitable for secondary mirrors. Has anyone tried this?

Thanks.

Clear skies, Alan

Alan,
I have an L&R ultrasonic clearer I use for jewelery and many other small items. When you mix a new tank of water and cleaning solution you have to run the unit for a few minutes to get the air out of the fresh water and mix the cleaning solution with the new water. The test to see if the mix is ready to clean objects is to stick a foil gum wrapper in the solution and if the solution is ready the foil will have many pin holes in it by the ultrasonic action. I would not want to subject a high quality mirror's coatings to this kind of power. Just sticking your finger in the solution when the ultrasonic clearer is on gives you a very harsh "tingle".
