Variable polarizer vs neutral density for lunar vi

If one has a variable polarizer to cut down the moon's glare, is there any reason to have one or two neutral density filters. Do they give a better quality image?

Besides the obvious flexibility vs cost argument, what are the pros and cons? Are there applications where a VP works better than a neutral density and vice-versa?

I don't use a filter even when viewing the moon in a large scope. The moon is bright to the dark adapted eye but since the dark adapted eye does not provide the best resolution, I suggest viewing the moon with some nearby ambient light.
