What webcam for astrophotography do you recommend that is compatible with Windows 7 32-bit OS that would have good control of exposure, gamma, etc? ('scuse me if I am revealing my ignorance....)

None. Oh, if you can find an older Quikcam or Phillips Toucam, it could work, but it will require modification if you expect to use it on anything but the Moon and planets. On which it will work fine. Today's webcams, the few available ain't much good for Astro.
If you want to try webcam Solar System imaging, look at the Celestron NexImage.
