There's an Abbe Ortho being auctioned. I know these are legendary, and have proven themselves in the field. My question is why are they so good?

I would think that modern makers could surpass the orthoscopic design, and that modern coatings would make things even better. Why is it (if that is true) that this old eyepiece is tops?

These eyepices are state of the art using the Ortho design. These are not old eyepieces and have the absolutely best modern coatings and glass.

They are so good because of the high polish, coatings, glass and design of them using the best of modern methods.

The information offered in response to your inquiry is certainly correct. However, I would add to it that Alan French's observation that differences between planetary eyepieces are "subtle."

Hi George,
I have had the oportunity to test a few Orthos, including the best.
Not trying to be contrary here, but just wanting to make a point.
The best Ortho was marginally better than a lesser one. That is to say that the best was a little sharper, clearer, brighter with less scatter.
The difference in performance vs. price was not equal however. So, if you have a bit of money and just want the best, then these EPs are for you. grin If you just want a good Ortho with good performance, then you can buy a complete set of them for the cost of one of these. 8)
Flame suit on, I realize that many will not consider this a fair assessment, but really it is just a factual statement.
So, my $.02 on this. wink
