I am also a newbi, I have a hardin 10" dob and saw the good advise jack got on his ep collection, and was hoping I also could get some.
I do not wear eyeglasses.
I observe planets ,globs galaxies,nebulas,moon...basically eveything up there..
heres what I got..

40mm orion optilux (not good in this scope)
30mm celestron ultima
25mm astrola plossel
18 mm uo hd ortho
15mm televue plossel
12.5 ultima
9mm astrola plossel
7mm uo ortho
orion shorty plus barlow

I would like to narrow it down to 3 to 5 decent eps and a barlow (all 1.25).

what should I keep and get rid of?
thx
Brian

I was very happy with my TV plossls at 25mm,15mm,11mm and TV 2x barlow. I have an 8" f/6 which has pretty much the same fl as your 10".
This gave me 48x, 81x, 110x, 162x, and 220x. I didn't barlow the 25mm.

Now if you have some money to burn, which I didn't, but did any way, I got a 24mm Pan, 13mm, 9mm, 7mm, and 5mm T6 Naglers.

Hi Brian,
I think you have a good set myself. The Astrola Plossls are not the greatest though. The Ultimas and the 40mm Opitluxe I do like though. The UO Orthos are good too. I would consider dumping the Astrolas and replacing them with Ultimas or TV Plossls. TV Plossls would be the better choice, but the Ultimas are a good bang for the buck.
As far as getting down to 3-5 EPs and a Barlow, it can be done, but it is not my choice.

I don't have an answer to your question (I try to standardize on Naglers) but I can answer a different question (typical of a consultant!):
Your Hardin had a two inch focuser, no? I would get a cheap wideangle eyepiece of about 32mm or more, from Rini or some similar source, to use as a finder eyepiece and for widefiled views of M24, the Veil, the Pleiades, the Beehive, etc. I use a 38 mm Rini on my f5 scopes for this purpose. (If money were no object, I would get the 31 Nagler for this purpose.)
I don't see anything wrong with your present eyepiece collection, though.
Clear skies,

I have an 8" f/6 DOB and I am a big fan of UO and Televue products. I use 12mm and smaller UO EP's for planets and 13mm and higher Televue Panoptics and Naglers for DSO's. I do have a 13mm T6 Nagler that does double duty between planets and DSO's. My main go to EP's are; 5mm UO, 12mm Edmund RKE, 13mm Nagler T6 and 22mm Panoptic. I much perfer the FOV with the Pans and Naglers over the Plossl's in the medium to low magnifications. Hope this helps
