I have read in the past about people having some problems with Celestron Ultima eyepieces and Orion filters. Threads were not quite compatible. but this was back around 1998. I have been looking at the Orion basic color filter set, and Ultrablock. But I also own a 10mm Ultima and 25mm e-Lux eyepiece that came with the scope. Does anyone know if their will be a problem with Ultima and Orion filters. 8)

First off I'm a relative newcomer of 2 1/2 years in this hobby. I currently have a 4"APO and a premium mid size dob and a set of premium eyepieces. I've seen those the do not use filters at all and there are those that find them invaluable. Personally I do not use them. I tried the Ultrablock or light pollution filter in both my scopes and did not like it. An example is Orion Nebula did stand out just a bit more but I did not like the mottled and blurry look in the rest of the FOV. I tried it on several other targets and had similar results, I just didn't like the over all view using it.
As far as colored filters I'm still learning. Most colored filters are too dark for small scopes so I cherry picked to make up a set of very light filters but in all honesty I haven't used them much or enough to give a good opinion. I can't say about colored filter use in medium to large scopes. All in all I recommend taking it slow on collecting filters because many filters out of a set may just not work.

Here are two web sites about filter that may be of some help if you haven't been to them yet.

As far as the threads fitting the Ultimas I cannot help. I do know they fit the Televue line of eyepieces.
Hope this helps

I use Ultimas and Ultrascopics (24, 25, 30, and 35mm) with Orion and Celestron filters without any problem. Some combination of eyepieces/filters I own requires more delicate initial threading, but right now I don't recall which ones! I think there may be unit to unit variation rather than a line of eyepiece problem.

The great thing about Orion is that their 30 day money back pledge is for real. So, just buy the ones you need and if they don't work out, EITHER send them back--or better yet--because they will fit your other eyepieces--KEEP them and get another eyepiece! Chances are, though, that they will work fine.

But I'll let others who own the 10mm Ultima chime in.

I'll second the comment that many filters are too dark for small apertures - the red filter that comes with the basic Orion set was WAYYYYY too dark for my 6inch scope. If you have 10 inch scope, it would probably do fine. I replaced the filter with a lighter red/orange filter (I don't remember the Wratten number just now), which is definitely more useful.

But, I will NOT second the comment about not liking the Ultrablock! It's not a miracle worker, but on the right objects it's great.

I've used the Ultrablock with a 30mm Ultima, and it worked fine.
