SN10 question

Recently I bought a used Meade SN10. It is in fairly good shape, but I noticed a strange thing.

At the primary end of the scope is a piece of black plastic or plastic-covered cardboard that is loose and moves around. Apparently, it was held in place by glue. When it is really off-center, the actual glass of the mirror back is visible and touchable.

I'm thinking of taking it to the Chiefland Fall Star Party next week, so I wonder if exposing the back of the mirror to the cold, damp night air would be a problem. If so, how do I fix it? Will a glob or two of silicone adhesive take care of it or do I need to seal it off well?

I am considering replacing that cheap-assed plastic focuser with a Moonlight CR with the DC motor drive option.

Anybody have any experience with that set-up?

This thing is a real beast! My wife, looking at the SN10 sitting on my G-11, said its sheer size was intimidating. Lugging it and the G-11 around will build up my upper body strength.

In general, you want to expose the mirror to that cold night air, otherwise you will suffer thermal equilibrium problems all night long.

OK, I'm heading out for Chiefland tomorrow (Wednesday). I was hoping to leave earlier, but am waiting for the arrival of the heated dew shield I ordered from Scope Stuff. Should be here Wednesday morning and I will drive the 3 hours north to Chiefland. I will perform a weight lifter's exercise in 1) setting up the G-11, which is probably the equivalent of 15 minutes in a gym and 2) setting the SN10 onto the G-11. That routine should burn off all excess carbs and has me thinking seriously of a Scoperoller.

I will also see if the SN10 will work on my new Sirius EQ-G. Probably not, but it's worth a try.

I will take some photos and post them here. Plus, I will give you a report on how the scope performs for Ralph (or anybody else who is interested).
