I have a question that has been bothering me for a while about baffles in a refractor.
Do they matter? Televue, I believe doesn't use them, others use knife edge baffles, foam baffles (that is what is in my Megrez 80), and cone baffles. But every time I try to think about this and draw it out on paper, it appears to me that even the best baffles become rather meaningless if a significantly long dew shield is in place and the inside surface is a non-reflective black surface. So it makes me wonder how much they really affect viewing and photographic use.
Is there a way to test whether baffles make a difference or not, either visually or photographically? If so, how could this be done?
