curved vein spider in a square tube

I'm working on plans for my first scope. It's gonna be a variation of the Berry 6" DOB from chapter 5 of his book. I think I'd prefer a curved vein spider and was wondering if the following is feasible:

The inside dimension of my scope is gonna be 9.5 inches square. Could I...

1. Take a 9.5" square 1/2" piece of plywood
2. Cut out a 9" diameter circle
3. Mount a curved vein spider to the inside cut out of that square piece of plywood
4. Slide that square into the main tube assembly and secure it.

The 9" circle comes from the widest baffle that "Newt" computed, which would sit at the opening of the tube. I figured there was no harm in putting a 9" opened block of plywood inside as this exceeded the measurements of all other baffles inside the tube.

Is this a reasonable approach?

thx in advance,
jeff

I would just attach the curved spider to the square tube. At this size a single vein 180-degree arch would probably be stable enough (there was a nice article a few month ago inS&T describing a homemade 8" scope with a curved spider like this).

You could still put the baffles in, but I would make the baffles out of something lightweight instead of 1/2" plywood. You don't need all of the baffles listed in Newt, the important ones are the two above and below the focuser, the one above the mirror, and the tube wall behind the secondary (I like to add a ring baffle behind the primary mirror too, so light can't reflect off the ground into the light path).

Hope this helps,
