My Giro Knock Off

After admiring so many good projects on this forum. I set out to make my own. This Alt/Azm mount was custom machined
from solid stock in my home shop. The 1.25" shaft rides on a 3" UHMW bearing. The mount body is similarly set up. Motions aregreat, like butter. It will never need lubrication, and tension is easyily adjustable with the big knobs. I think the whole thing weighs in at about 10lbs, not counting the brass counter weight. Saddle plate is from a Gm-8, so I can have the OTAinterchangable on both mounts.

What do you think?

Thanks,

I think it's great. Very nice work. I'm usually not enamored with brass, but I *do* like the effect in this particular piece. I'm sure the machined finish is one reason why.

Might I ask a few ??s:

Can you elaborate/explain the function(s) of the six screws on either side of the az block?

How does the top tension bolt interface with the shaft -- i.e., is the tip of the (steel?) bolt in direct contact with the shaft? or is there another material involved (UHMW, Delrin/Nylatron tip, else)?

Anodized? Raw? Other?

Great stuff, Anthony. Thanks for sharing.

That is a beauty -- let me know if you start making those for sale. I have a Giro 2 deluxe and really like it. The weight it can handle is amazing - I'm using it for a 6" f/8 refractor right now (the attached photo is of my first set up with a 4" Borg & 5" Apex Mak). Regarding tripods - check out the Hercules QuickSet. It is lightweight and solid and the elevating column is a real luxury.
