Now that I have my tube material for the scope I am in the process of building, has anyone out there had any luck in re-coating their own objective lens? And if you have, what chemicals are involved, and are they readily available. And did you have good luck in doing so? Any advice is most appreciative. Thanks :S

If you can find a copy of Amateur Telescope Making Vol 3 by Albert Ingalls you'll get an idea of what needs to be done.
You'll need a vacuum chamber to start.

Let me explain a little further, Terry.
The process generally used for coatings is the depositing of metal compounds in a high vacuum chamber. The coating materials are vaporized and then they condense on the glass surface(s). The procedure is usually done under very high temperatures.

Before you can recoat a lens, you will first have to remove the original coating. There have been a number of threads on these forums regarding the stripping of damaged coatings on lenses. Typically you would have to grind off the old coating and repolish and refigure the glass surfaces. It's not a simple task. If you can find an easier method, folks would like to hear about it.
