I've read some of the comments and agree that any tool used in such as manner as to inconvenience or bother others is at least a nuisance, in this case, possibly a safety concern. I think that it is simply another factor that has to be added to the "star party rules of astronomical etiquette". If you do a google on "astronomical etiquette" you will find numerous examples to which the use of GLP's could be added, just as we have rules about flashlights, touching equipment, etc.
Most people will respond positively(if treated courteously) if they simply know what the rule is and why it exists.
