As as starter scope I've been working on a copyscope (what can I say, it's cheap uh-uh inexpensive.) The lens is a plummer f/4.5, FL 229mm, the aperture is 75mm. I don't think there's one iota of plastic in it, it's all metal and glass and mucho heavy.

Now the question, would it be worth the trouble to crack this moose of a lens open and use the lenses to make a physicaly longer and lighter scope.

Many thanks.

The "star" we look at tonight may have exploded millenniums ago. (To progress, we must discern what exists and what does not).

I don't really see any advantage to taking it apart, the focal length will remain the same, you will have to make a cell for the objective, by the time you are done, you have some real money invested and still have the optical issues associated with a 75mm F4.5 Achromat, ie, mucho false color.

If you want cheap, keep an eye open on Astromart. There is one of the Ganymede 80mm F5's advertised for $50, pretty hard to beat that.
