PST double stack- can it be used as normal PST?

I am thinking about getting a Coronado PST- not sure if I want to get the double stack or original PST.

Can the double stack be used as a regular PST (removing the extra filter)? Will it matter greatly for observing or imaging with respect to prominences that are better viewed closer to 1.0 A?

Also, are the double stacked PSTs available from vendors from the factory that way, or do they assemble them and sell them that way?

The PST single etalon scope is stand-alone. To double stack, you simply purchase an additional SM40 etalon which screws directly onto the end of the PST. Double stacking primarily increases detail on the solar disk, not prominences. Vendors sell these as two separate items: The PST and the SM40 etalon. I would suggest purchasing a PST and trying it out as a single stack first and then consider purchasing the double stack etalon later if you want to explore things further. That is the way I went when I was using the Coronado equipment. FWIW, I would also seriously consider the Lunt Solar System offerings. Their 60mm H-alpha scopes are fabulous! The increased aperture and image size is remarkable as compared to the PST and it might end up costing the same. The SM40 double stack etalon ain't cheap ($795!!). And I will say that the machining and finish on the Lunt scopes is second to none. One final thought: I am not one to dis companies, but, from experience, Meade Customer Service is, well, challenging at best if the need arises. Just food for thought.
