Did you hear about the one eyed astronomer?

Now everyone is looking for the punch line. Unfortunately I am the punchline.
Due to a recent illness I will probably lose my sight in my left eye.

I have been an astronomer for more than 45 years and to say the least I am disheartened.

What I want to know has this happened to anyone else and how to deal with it.
I sure as hell don't want to give up the hobby but the are certain restrictions that go along with it.

I am really for someone who has gone through this and how they adapted.

Frank C.

Sorry to hear about your issue, but if you are right eyed, then it would not be as bad I guess. Binoviewing will be out of course, but for most visual it should not cause too much problem.

Hi Frank, that's a bummer. My left (dominant) is acting up with an IMMENSE opaque floater. 90% of the time it blocks most all of my central vision. They may be able to extract it doing a "vitrectomy" which has risks. Most all scopes are one-eyed, so the impact on the hobby shouldn't be debilitating. I sometimes worry over things like, "What if I'm driving and get a mote in my one good eye?" And I have mostly binos...
