Hi all,

A giant image taken at the Palomar Observatory has been placed on display at the Griffith Observatory. Covering a section of the Virgo cluster, the picture was produced by Caltech astronomers.

The great cosmic panorama, named The Big Picture, is 152 feet long by 20 feet high, and it covers the entire wall of the Richard and Lois Gunther Depths of Space exhibit hall at Griffith Observatory. It is displayed on 114 steel-backed porcelain enamel plates

That is what I call BIG!!! 8O

"We wanted to inspire the public and convey the richness of the deep universe and its understanding, and to do it with a real scientific data set," says Djorgovski. "We are doing research with these data, but there is also a sense of beauty and awe, which is important to communicate, especially to young people."

More information is here:

To see the picture, scroll down to the bottom and click on the "media" link. There you can download the image and a number of sections. If your internet connect can handle it, download the full-sized jpgs, (up to 14 Mgb! 8O They must have been looking at the latest MRO images. wink ) they show impressive detail.

The display opens to the public in early November.

Cheers,

Maurice
