"I don't have anything specifically against having a contest forum. But up until now there has not been one. I am not entirely sure it would be a perfect solution though. I do feel that the objections to the contest in this forum is probably only going to be by a minority since I think most see the win/win situation. The clear winners will be those who win the prizes. Also much more attention will be given this forum as a result. You don't have to go back very far to realize how far this forum has come. Just over a year ago this forum was used for no other purpose but to siphon people to the Yahoo Binoviewer group. Everything that has happened here has not be 100% stellar, but infinitely better than the completely dead forum that it was. About 2700 posts here now were not here a year ago. So complaining about what the forum is about seems strange considering that it use to be about nothing."
Your contest is better than nothing. Interesting concept.
"These contests are encouraging critical thinking and educating people."
So guessing that you cut and pasted two halves of a binoviewer image together encourages critical thinking? Riiiggghhht.
"The price of me doing this is rather high. It would be just as easy to seek out online vagrants and have them come over here and babble about my products being the greatest on the planet. It is dirt cheap to do and there are many takers."
Don Regan and Glen Scott
"I would prefer to keep things above reproach. I am more surprised that it took this long for the contest to be taken aim at. But here is the bottom line, if Herb does not want the contests they will end. Second, if the contests are undersupported because of being stuck in an untraveled area they will end also."
Like your website?
"Who will this serve?"
The folks who could care less about your advertising scheme.
"I have been told by a marketing consultant that education is marketing's worst nightmare. Sorry but I don't subscribe to this. So I could imagine that there are some who would like this type of education to end."
Is this the same guy that told you our eyes are more sensitive to vertical rather than horizontal collimation errors? He's really smart.
"Once again it is up to Herb. If he feels that contests are inconsistent with forums, then fine. I believe that we have already heard from some of the most vocal on the group. Maybe we will hear from others who may not be so quick to voice out."
Like you would listen to anyone.
My $.02 worth.
