The above is a well-made South Korean movie with English subtitles that accurately depicts the true events that led to the sinking of a South Korean frigate during the world cup event in 2003. It has achieved the same notoriety in South Korea as "American Sniper" and "Blackhawk Down" have achieved in America.
In essence, the north Koreans, jealous of south Korea's showing during the world cup, sought retribution by deliberately sinking a south Korean naval vessel. The frigate they sank was essentially the same as those in the US Navy, replete with modern sonar, radar and weaponry. How did they do it? They took an old gunboat, refitted it with more armor cladding, and stuck a world war 2 Russian T-34 main battle tank on its deck. They drifted to within a 100 or so yards of the frigate and opened up at essentially point blank range. Additionally, they placed snipers on the deck, and in a decapitation strike, killed officers and crew thereby taking out command and control of the south Korean vessel. The south Korean vessel responded with gatling guns and machine-gun fire but it basically bounced off the frontal armor of the tank. It took two or more larger south Korean ships with heavier cannons to stop it but although the north Korean crew was killed, the hulk continued back into north Korean waters without sinking.
Catch it on netflix.
