My wife is from that area, and grew up in Brookhaven, a small township just outside of Philly. That whole area has a bunch of small townships that all pretty much run together and are an easy commute via I-95 to downtown Philly, the airport, etc. "Easy" being a relative term of course, as Philladelphia and NJ drivers make things interesting to say the least.
There are also train stations around Media should you prefer to take mass transit. I would look around Aston or Media if it were me. I also liked Norwood, which has a lot of Italian and Irish influence. You can get good food and find a couple of decent Irish pubs there. I'm only halfway familiar with the areas south of Philladelphia though, and I believe that there are more upscale areas to the north of the city.
Some of the areas that were once nice, aren't so nice anymore. Brookhaven and Parkside for example. It is, however, worth a trip to Parkside to get a cheesesteak at Phil and Jim's!
Check out the Delco Times at www.delcotimes.com to get an idea of real estate prices, crime rates, etc. in Delaware County. Of course, there is always downtown Philly if you have the money and inclination to live in the midst of it all!
BTW, have you had enough of the metropolis of Tally already?

As you have no doubt learned, unless you are a huge FSU fan (I am not), there's not much else going on.
