Phone Bill Question

Hey, everyone! Here is a question: If I were to cancel my current long-distance service on my home phone (I use ATT as my long-distance provider) could I still make a 1-800 call? I get charged $6 or $7 per month whether I make any long distance calls just for the privilege of being able to make such a call if I wish. If I do make a long distance call, it cost $0.14 to $0.16 a minute. I can get a prepaid calling card at the dollar store for $0.05 per minute, but have to punch in a few more numbers. Anyone know?

Jim, thanks for the information. I am one of few dozen people in the world who does not have a cell phone...I hate the idea of being permanently wired to everyone else in the world. I cringe when my home phone rings! I make very few long-distance calls anyway, and paying a corporate giant like AT&T $80 or $90 per year just for the availability of service bugs me.
