I'm a dental director of a public health clinic, staff member of 20 years in same clinic. The best I can say is: give everyone their own bit of responsibility..as with a child..use positive encouragement as much as possible..push people to step out on their own a bit so as to build a proactive lets get the job done team. During staff meetings provide a broad overview of the current situation, give the staff goals to achieve, and let them participate and value their contributions to solving problems within the department. Also see that staff are awarded appropriately when there are improvements. Nothing is more detrimental than having people try, suceed, and nothing is mentioned to them about their sucess..do so especially in front of their working peers. Any "negative" comments should be done privately if possible.
