This will sound like a dumb question, but I haven't had a VCR in about four years and I didn't use it very much when I had it. I think ours also flashed "12:00" all the time. 
But, what is the cheapest, simplest, way to record a TV program in the post-VCR era without getting a Tivo? If a DVD recorder or VCR/DVD combo says "no internal tuner" can you still record a TV program by routing cables to it from the cable box? 8O
