I am new to astrophotography. Yesterday I used my 80mm ed as a guide scope (test) with PHD software and it worked perfectly. Next step is to add the guide scope to my 6" reflector with a Canon digital slr. My question is, would the Orion x-y guidestar finder (throw away adjustable rings) or the Orion off-axis guider (no guide scope needed) be useful and worth purchasing. I noticed that you need a somewhat bright guide star to be used with the Meade DSI 1 guide camera.
Thanks

Greg,
One thing to consider when using a seperate guide scope is flexure, you need to make sure the scope is solidly mounted with stable rings so it cannot move at all. This goes for the focuser and guide camera too, they must not move at all. Also the mirror in your imaging scope needs to be secure enough not to move around or you will end up with poor star shapes. It does work,I prefer to use a seperate guide scope because it makes finding guide stars easy. An off axis guider eliminates the flexure problems but it may be more difficult to find suitable guide stars, just depends on the size of your guide chip and focal length of your scope.

I would say use what you have now and see if you can make it work,if not go with plan B grin
