After reading about the SLOAN Digital Sky Survey in the February issue of S&T, I had to try the Drift Scan Mode of my camera to check what kind of results were possible.
DSM allows to get pictures of stripes of the sky that are wide as the camera horizontal resolution and tall at will, without moving the camera, that is without using a mount to track the sky sideral motion.
This was very appealing to me because I'm still fighting with my mount to get consistent autoguided results.
After a few days of poor weather, I had a chance to try yesterday night for the first time.
I attached a cropped image of the full stripe : an area including M42 .
Full size image is available at :
http://www.astrosurf.com/mpaolilli/m42drift.jpg
Technical details are :
Tele = Newt. 10" F4.8 ( 1200mm )
CCD camera = Audine with KAf401E ( 9x9 um pixels )
Equivalent integration time : 60 seconds
North is UP.
I'd really appreciate to know of anyone who uses this method to share info !
Clear skies,
Marco
