I have a chance to pick up a SBIG ST-6 used. Can anyone give a a first hand run down on this as a starter CCD to use on my 12" LX200? I know its a discontinued model but i have no idea what they sold for new and what it should be worth now.
Thanks for your help!

Hi David,

We use a number of ST-6's here at the college to teach students the basics of CCD imageing. It seems like a good camera, however the chip is a little small so with a 12" LX200 you will have a very small field of view. However the pixels are large and so should match the focal length quite well.

It should make a very good starter camera but I think that you will soon catch the CCD version of aperture fever, a bigger chip and smaller pixels!

I have no idea what they would be selling for these days, but ST-4's and ST-5's seem to be around the $500 - $600 US so I would guess around $800 or so.

Below is a 120 sec image of M51 taken by one of the students a while back. It was taken with an 8" f/6.3 LX200. It might give you some idea of what you can get. No processing apart from dark subtraction was done on the image.

hope this helps.

Maurice
